`LANZAROTE'

A Group show.

June 3rd - August 9th 2009

Pia Camil
Tomoo Gokita
Michael Kirkham
Alice Walton
George Young

Named after the impressive volcanic island and the novella by Michel Houellebecq, the protagonist contemplating the islands terrain states 'the conflict of the island, the volcanoes creation and the sea is destruction.'
Using both the dynamic and illustrious narrative of the book and the book as an object, Lanzarote brings together five artists whose work uses many additional and reductive processes that either explore a succinct narrative or leave work near a state of collapse.

The striking diagonals of Pia Camil construct space, ominous hoarding frames the architecture of the physical and aesthetic space. Her works act as a silhouette to make the viewer simultaneously conscious of
a confined container that is the gallery space.

Tomoo Gokita works in a painterly language to form a figurative landscape awash with abstract rhetoric. The monochromatic paintings of figurative elements are fused with swabs of paint that, in turn, exist as a rendering of an abstract painting.

The paintings of Michael Kirkham are voyeuristic visions, showing in Lanzarote are a series of prints and a painting containing a gloved hand that is engaged with various sexual encounters, the hand coming from within the viewers space, causes the viewer to be involved in an ambivalent sexual act.

Alice Walton constructions are made of various building materials to construct pillars to display collages and drawings. The pillar acts as a playful; architectural monument, while the drawings of obscured images render cancellations out of found photographic material.

George Young pars down the surface and support structure, highly finished stretcher frames are leant against the wall, surrounded by works that shift in focus through painterly technique and in the origin of the image.

Pia Camil is a recent graduate from the Slade School of Fine Art,
Tomoo Gokita born 1969 Tokyo, Japan. Recent exihibitions include Taka Ishii Gallery Tokyo and is represented by ATM Gallery, New York.
Michael Kirkham was born 1971, lives and works in Berlin, recent exhibitions include Gemeente Mueseum Den Haag, and is represented by Aschenbach and Hofland, Amsterdam.
Alice Walton born 1972 lives and works in London, forthcoming exhibitions include
`one thing against another' Aspex, Portmouth.
George Young born 1981 is a recent graduate from the RCA.

`Man and Space'

New paintings by Tim Parr

May 15th-June 22nd

Man has always been fascinated by space and the unknown. Parr's most recent paintings focus around constructing visual space where figures reach, climb, and contort, building towards the indefinite.

Parr's unique magical realist style can relate back to Victorian English artist, Richard Dadd, who created highly detailed paintings of fairies and the supernatural worlds. Dadd's mystical works heavily relied on imagination and vision. Like Dadd, Parr creates tranquil yet unsettling worlds blurring the lines of the natural environment and fantasy. His ambiguous narratives are dream like- where something which seems familiar becomes disconnected.

Memory and history inform Parr's work as is evident in through the influence of Italian master painters. Giotto's Scrovegni Chapel shaped Parr's fascination with built environments where figures create the pictorial space. Similarly, Parr applies a contemporary take on Caravaggio's chiaroscuro method of using a darker palette juxtaposed with bright contrasting highlights. This technique emphasizes religious undertones through an intense yet vague light source hitting an outstretched arm reaching out or light washing over a body stretching over wooden boards in the shape of a cross. Parr combines the Renaissance ideas of idyllic human forms with a Baroque exaggeration of movement.

Parr works with life models to render his bodies. Using his partner to inspire many of his figures, Parr crafts within the classical artist and muse mode of making. In mythology muses were mysterious nymphs, almost super human creatures, who inspired artistic creation. This mythical notion adhere Parr's use of imagination and fantasy to assemble narratives.

A departure from his earlier ethereal environments, Parr imposes his figures on a dark background creating curious compositions where figures construct the depth and dynamism of the space. Parr's figures organically fold into one another using their forms to generate architecture and patterning in each painting ever blending artifice and reality.

Tim Parr is a London based artist and presents his first solo show at Keith Talent, London. He has recently had solo exhibitions at Sartorial Contemporary, London (2007) and Galeria Thomas Cohn, San Paulo (2006).

Construction is on loan, with thanks, from a private US collection.

`Hokey Cokey Chokey'
New work by Shaun Doyle and Mally Mallinson
April 3rd - May 11th 2008

Cocaine, once the drug of the rich, is now the most popular drug of the masses and this wonderfully socialist sharing of pleasure and vice is celebrated in, `Hokey Cokey Chokey'.

Set in the toilet block of a prison wing, `Hokey Cokey Chokey', could be compared to Hogarth's, `Gin Lane' 1750, but without any moral stance its comment on drug use and the cult of celebrity remains ambiguous. Six figures, chained together and wearing prison orange boiler suits dance round a toilet piled high with the white stuff. Each of the figures is taken from a previous work by Doyle and Mallinson - (the Pinocchio-like wooden boy from `Black Forest Ghetto', the skinhead from `Fascist Fruit Boys' and the bishop from `Tanky Monk' etc.), a `greatest hits' of recent shows.

The origins of the Hokey Cokey are obscure but Tillotson has speculated that the dance is a mockery of the Catholic mass. The Hokey Cokey refers to the `hocus pocus' and gesticulations of the Catholic priest, who, during Eucharist, with his back to the congregation signs the words `hoc est corpus'. These words of consecration accompany the elevation of the host, the point at which, according to traditional Catholic practise, the transubstantiation takes place, a belief mocked by Puritans and others as a form of `magic words'. Other sources conjecture that the dance is based on folk dance or Morris dance origins, such as the Hock-Tuesday Play. What is certain is that the Hokey Cokey was first recorded as a dance tune in 1942 by Jimmy Kennedy, also responsible for such songs as, `We're going to hang out the washing on the Siegfried line' and `Teddy Bears Picnic', `Hokey Cokey' becoming tremendously popular during wartime Britain, particularly in London's East End as a morale boosting dancehall knees-up.

`Hokey Cokey Chokey' is both a critique of organised faith and a social comment on recent history, taking elements of folk art, British politics and personal religious experience as its basis. As with Doyle and Mallinson's other works, its aesthetic is consciously `home-made' and amateurish, marrying second hand found materials with rapidly made sculpted forms.

Doyle and Mallinson have worked collaboratively since 2004. `Hokey Cokey Chokey' is their second solo show at Keith Talent, London. They have recently had solo shows at John Hansard Gallery, UK. MOT, UK and Odapark, NL.

News: Alice Walton in "One Thing Against Another"

August 2008

"One Thing Against Another" invites five artists to make sculptural works for a number of public buildings local to aspex, and in the gallery itself: the Norrish Central Library, Victoria Park Aviary, the Natural History Museum butterfly house, and Portsmouth Harbour Station. The artists will negotiate these very particular contexts with an inquisitive and generous spirit, as well as presenting work in the gallery.

These artists share a seemingly blind preoccupation with materials and construction. They tend to create works whose method of realisation is explicitly self-evident, suggesting a process of playful invention and experimentation. Much of the work will be made on-site.

The exhibition will foster an irreverent approach to form, materials and physical environment. It will rejoice in the slapstick of short-lived materials and provisional arrangements. In their work the artists confront walls, windows and columns with craft and ingenuity. The exhibition will embrace contingency in a number of sculptural works that lean, prop, hang, conceal and encrust. These works operate beyond the space of a plinth or frame. Whether in the gallery or outside in other public spaces, they rub-up against their immediate physical landscape for support.

Sam Basu’s (born 1967, lives in London and France) drawings and sculptures have been designed for the guinea pig enclosure at Victoria Park aviary, popular with local children.

James Ireland (born 1977, lives in London) has produced a major new sculpture at Portsmouth Harbour Station. Constructed in the 70m window along the platform, the work reflects ambient light from both station and harbour and reveals anew the view of the adjacent HMS Warrior built in 1860.

Eduardo Padilha (born 1964 in Brazil, lives in London) will introduce a series of soft sculptures and window stencils into the late modernist Norrish Central Library.

David Kefford (born 1972, lives in Cambridge) will make hanging sculptures amongst the plants in the butterfly house at Cumberland House.

Drawings, video and sculptural work related to the off-site interventions will engage with the gallery at aspex, built in 1814 as a naval storehouse. Alice Walton’s (born 1972, lives in London) intervention in the gallery includes the construction of a plasterboard and cardboard ‘wall’ sculpture, both as an obstruction and a support for other work.

The exhibition is accompanied by a programme of talks, family workshops and an interpretive guide.

One Thing Against Another is supported by the Henry Moore Foundation, Arts Council England, South East, Portsmouth City Council, Portsmouth Library Service, Portsmouth Museums Service, Portsmouth Parks Service, South West Trains, FA Projects and Kate McGarry Gallery.

Editors’ Notes

One Thing Against Another curated by Oliver Sumner continues the programme of intriguing and lively exhibitions at aspex, Portsmouth’s leading contemporary art gallery. Founded in 1981, aspex moved into new premises in the Vulcan Building on the waterfront at Gunwharf Quays in December 2006. The transformation of this disused naval storehouse into a bright and inviting arts space, that combines the best of the old and the new, won a Royal Institute of British Architects award in 2007.

The exhibition is open 10.30am – 6pm Tuesday – Saturday, 11 – 5pm Sunday. Closed on Mondays, admission is free.

Oliver Sumner, curator of One Thing Against Another, the exhibiting artists and Joanne Bushnell, Director at aspex, are available for interview.
